I'm trying to build myself a decent 'budget' computer that has a lot in the ways of future expansion. I'm also looking for pretty quiet (around PowerMac G5 noise level if anyone is familiar), low power consumption when idle and low heat output when idle. I'm willing to sacrifice the heat and power though so I don't have a useless Intel GMA machine ...

okay, I got WOL working on my Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe mobo, I can use wakeonlan via terminal to remotely turn on my computer, but of course I need to go one step further. I need to remotely access my computer, preferably as soon as it turns on, I want in control of it. I've only ever used remote access where the computer being accessed ...

If you don't want to resize your partition, I gues wubi might be a decent option. I don't really like the *buntus but others are fond. Usually, you'll find that you set it up in your bootloader and it just works (use GRUB).
As for ''programming software....'' I'm not really certain what you mean by this. Do you mean the ...

I am shopping for a CF card to put in my IDE adapter to act as a primary hard drive. I'm going to get an 8gb or 16 gb, but I was wondering what speed to get. Is 133X (20mbps) good enough? or should I go higher? Or maybe even lower?

Sorry Yagyuu Jubei, that's no myth. To clarify:
Yes, it can certainly use all the memory you give it. I don't know if Windows ever got any better than this, but the kernel's memory allocation scheme efficiently grants large swaths of memory to caching things that might be needed. For example, if I load Gimp, the python and perl ...

Ralyon:And if you are using a hardware firewall, I can almost garuntee you are already using linux or at least something derived from Linux for that. [/soapbox_again]
Sorry. FreeBSD :)
But to echo what's already been said, it's not quite FUD so much anymore. To be sure, there's not much awareness, but that's a different arena. And ...

A huge part of people's reluctance to even try Linux operating systems is the Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) passed around by Microsoft and other companies intent on ensuring Microsoft's overgrowth in the OS market. Anybody have links to FUD-dispellers? Anybody have any ideas on how to get that out to the masses? I missed ...

I don't know what that was, but your link seems broken. It also seems to be from 2007, by the link. Googling the address turns up the cache, though. A quick read and most of the bullets are more or less accurate, save for some important details.
First, though, let me preface this by saying that, as she notes, the kernel develops ...

So, quite a while back I talked about how I wanted to be a network admin for a Unix/Linux environment. Still a work in progress, but I'm learning. Getting pretty close to getting my associates degree, anyway. Just have to take a couple Windows classes and a couple infrastructure courses about routers and stuff. Then I get ...

I'm am a novice looking to build a non-Microsoft desktop for simple office use. I can't quite find what I want from any system sellers. I plan to run OpenOffice, Firefox, Acrobat and an opensource email package on Ubuntu. That's pretty much it. No games, no high-end graphics. No high compute demnds. Very simple, reasonably fast ...

can anyone provide me with some information on what currently available linux sata adapters can handle 1 tb drives?

Ok, here is my opinion. Feel free to disagree or agree with me on anything :)
With the recent flub of Microsoft's flagship software, Windows' new version of Vista, and the constant growth of alternative computer operating systems such as SuSE, debian, Ubuntu Linux, I believe it comes down to US as users of software to tell the ...

Well, fundings kinda stalled on this for the moment. I do have the slim slot-loading DVD-ROM drive, though (I bought two since it was an amazing price).I figured if I mention Linux, this thread'll draw people in. ;)But, truthfully, I've been thinking about running Damn Small Linux (DSL) on this machine, with a FluxBox interface, and probably just ...

Besides backtick (`), my all-time favorite is ''find'' in the form of $ find -name <pattern> -execdir <application or another_shell_command> \;For example:1. Using ffmpeg to convert all avi files in my `pictures' directory and all subdirectories under it to h264 Quicktime format, mov or mp4$ cd ~/pictures ...
