RAID 0 - How exactly?

    RAID 0 - How exactly?

I currently have an M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition motherboard in my computer, and I'm going to use one of the same to build another computer. I have purchased two Seagate 2700.10 250GB SATA HDD's and I would like to put them in RAID 0. Since I have the same board, I looked around in my BIOS (the other computer is still a work in progress) and I have a basic idea on how to setup the RAID configuration, but I'm not sure I'm correct in my guessing, and I've yet to find a video review, or textual document anywhere online as to how to do this exactly. I know what RAID is, I know how it works, I just want to know how to do it with this board/BIOS!! Anyway, if someone who knows how could let me in on the secret so I don't screw up and set fire to my new rig (yea, I'm paranoid like that), please let me know. I don't know for sure what BIOS version I'm running off the top of my head (it's the one that came with the board, unless it's "auto-updated" or something), but I can look it up if necessary. Thanks to anyone for any help, ~Josh

Re: RAID 0 - How exactly?

For that mobo, you have 2 Options.

If your BIOS is up to date, there's a second "NVRaid" Bios in your Power On Self Test (POST) series.

There's a "Press (x)" to Enter RAID configuration" Screen, in that screen, you can create RAID arrays for any drives plugged into the NVRaid controller.

There's also a software package available from Asus/NVidia called NVRaid array manager, part of the Chipset Driver (NForce) package, that you can install and run in the OS to buidl arrays from disks on your NVRaid controller.

Question, do you want to BOOT from the new RAID0 array?

    Yes.

It says, "Press Tab to display POST, Press Del to Enter Setup" for sure, but I don't think I've seen the "enter RAID setup" option you're talking about. Do I have to press "tab" to see it, or disable the quick boot option in the BIOS to run the memtest?

Re: RAID 0 - How exactly?

    1) SATA controller needs to be in RAID mode, in BIOS.

    2) You can't migrate a existing C:\ from No-RAID to RAID0. You must re-insatll OS and format from scratch.

    3) To do this, for XP you will need to load RAID drivers from a floppy disk. XP's installer will NOT accept drivers from CD, USB mem stick, or other locations. Vista will, but NOT XP.

So basically I can't walk thorough it "without saving changes" or anything on my current system? I'm running Vista x64 by the way.

Re: RAID 0 - How exactly?

No, there is no migration path from a already working, bootable  OS volume on a hard drive, to add a drive and magically turn it into a working RAID array bootable volume.

Creating a RAID volume, you see, formats all drives in the volume.

you CAN however, add *2* drives, create a RAID0 volume, install the RAID array drivers on your OS, then use Ghost or Acronis "image" the Os onto the newly created RAID volume, then disconnect the original OS drive and try to boot to the RAID volume.

Complicated and time consuming, and leaves you with a drive at the end.

Re: RAID 0 - How exactly?

Yea, I'm currently building a computer for my girlfriend, and I'm using the same motherboard that I have. The RAID will be done with 2 blank Seagate 250's and a fresh install of Vista x64. I just wondered if I could walk through the steps using my mobo's BIOS (without completing the process) so I could make sure I knew what I was doing when the parts for her computer come (this Thursday can't come fast enough!). I was digging around in my closet and I happened upon the manual for the board, and it's all detailed in there, so I should be good. Thanks a lot for the help.
