AVG Accidentally Removes Critical Windows files

AVG Virus Scanner Accidentally Removes Critical Windows Component

it is said that vista users will not be affected so far but  some of our readers are reporting that Vista may be having similar problems to Windows XP.

guys be careful or you have to reinstall OS Super Angry or repair it with disk.

Re: AVG Accidentally Removes Critical Windows files

Yeah, I heard about this on a tech podcast that I listen to (Buzz Out Loud), though in the version that I heard, Vista was affected (and, why wouldn't it be?  It uses a lot of the same (or, at least, samely named) system files).  If you ever get a DLL flagged, it's always a wise idea to just replace it with a copy from the original CD than to outright delete it...

Re: AVG Accidentally Removes Critical Windows files

I am about ready to uninstall it, I have not had AVG uninstall critical files but one of its recent updates killed my ability to use my IM programs  The IM programs are a necessity with my wife deployed for the military.  I have to turn off AVG's firewall every time I log in to the computer.  Also, the Update manager started having issues connecting to look for updates.  I guess the not be able to update may be a good thing if a recent update is causing issues.

Re: AVG Accidentally Removes Critical Windows files

Anyone using AVG anyways should really do their research. That app has gone so far downhill, it isn't funny. Their catch rate is abysmal and it's obviously still causing compat issues.

I stick Avira on all my builds now. Very good catch scores, and light on resources. The only fall back is Avira pops you a couple ads a day trying to get you to by their pro version, but it's no biggie.

Avast is also good, but not as good. http://www.av-comparatives.org/

You're joking right?! That would be criminal if an AV deleted System32. lol

I do not recommend AVG since 8.0 came out.

Why do you say that ?

*IF* you Default set ANY AV product to take care of viruses "automatically" (delete first, then if can't, quarantine it,) why is ANYONE surprised that ANY file could be deleted or quarantined....?

Without prompting from the user ANY file is fair-game.

This is why EXE viruses are so damaging.  I had a client last year catch one.....I hadn't seen an EXE virus in about a decade.

Almost as soon as his Anti-virus product, (AVG as it happens,) became aware of each infected EXE program, it was deleted before it could launch.

Anyone want to take a guess at how many EXE files are in Windows ?  Never-mind all his client apps that were installed that no longer work.

Needless to say his system was no longer bootable, and when I did a quick search looking at the drive remotely, fully 50% of the remaining EXE files had "modified" dates equal to the date of infection, (rather than windows install date.)

The kicker is.....this virus, near as I can tell, did nothing other than replicate.  Had he NOT had AV protection, his system would have remained useable as if nothing was wrong.....for the life of the PC.  The "damage" was caused ENTIRELY by the AV protection.  Would other AV products have behaved differently ?  No.  SHOULD they have?  Again, No.  This is by design.

Would the same thing happen to DLLs....YES.  SHOULD the same thing happen to DLLs ?  Again, Yes.

If you want to be able to "control" what gets deleted or what "action" to take.....then it needs to be taken off "fix automatically" or similar verbage.
