    How do you do it?

I was wondering how you xperts train yourselves in certain types of games.  I play Guitar Hero and picked up World Tour and it's been interesting for me.  I didn't start playing the series until early this year on GH3 and I was terrible.  It took me months of practice but now I prefer to play on expert.  I had to force myself to move faster and at one point I turned on hyperspeed on expert as well as no fail to see what I could do.  It was rough, but after doing this for a couple of hours I turned off the no fail option.  A few tries later I had beaten a song on expert/hyperspeed.  I found that when I went back to nomal speeds expert seemed so much slower that I could respond better to the notes.  Nowadays, hard seems almost too slow for me.  I am now trying to do the bass career which is interesting due to the bar in GHWT and the # of notes.  I'm able to do this w/out a world of trouble in expert but I'm not anywhere near reaching 100% on any song in any ver of GH w/ any instrument.  I was looking forward to this game for the drums and I found out very quickly that I don't have the kind of coordination to play it.  I started out on easy and was bored qickly, medium was better but I found that I was moving too fast after a short while.  I tried hard and now the speed is much better but it does expect more of me and while I think I'm improving I have a very long way to go.

I was just wondering how the rest of you improve your skills in games.  It doesn't have to relate to GH I was simply using that as an example.

To put it simply...Practice. I personally don't really train myself to get better. I play because its fun and I get better along the way, picking up tips and tricks that enhance your game. As for most of the FPs games I play its about how the gun shoots and compensating for recoil etc.

It's all about fun to me.

In multi-player fps game which is what I mostly play. I find if you go out and find much better players than your self and only play with those people you learn how to play the game better and get better after time</runawaysentence>

Re: How do you do it?

I didn't mean to imply that I don't play for fun.  I do like to do well though at the same time.  In a Splinter Cell game I am possibly too conservative w/ my ammo.  I like to take them out w/ my hands so that if I find myself in a position where I need ammo I have it.  If it takes me too many bullets to take someone out in the beginning of a level/mission I commonly will either restart the mission or "fly by the seat of my pants" so to speak and if I die I can do things better from the checkpoint or beginning of the mission.  I don't play a game if I don't find it to be fun.  I just like to do well at it also.  In GH I don't like being booed off stage.  I want to be better at the game so that I can get through a song and will play it often to warm up and get better at it.

Re: How do you do it?

By the way you speak of playing Guitar Hero, it reminds me of how i practice playing real instruments Big Smile. I played Guitar Hero at Best Buy once, some 9 year old beat the snot out of me. So I took my pride, went across the street to Guitar Center and did something i enjoyed (ergo not mashing tiny buttons on a plastic model).

I understand everyone enjoys different types of games, which is to be expected as we all have different personalities. Some games come easier to some then others. I'm a hardcore racing fan, I even went and bought a G25 because of it. The way I "practice" is by pretending I'm really there on the track, I try not to bump in to anything or make any rash moves and just let the car flow along the turns. Keeping cool while going at 190MPH is not easy by any means, but it helps to try.

P.S Seems I went off on a bit of a rant there Stick out tongue.

Re: How do you do it?

    I just keep on playing

With games pre-Half-Life 2 (meaning before 2004), I would actually play through the game with cheats on first to get a feel for it, then go back and play again without cheats. But then I decided that was kind of lame so now I do it the other way. Play through a game normally, then depending on how much I've played it, I'll go back and play with cheats on or not.

Edit: Max, you shoulda dragged that 9-year-old with ya and said, "How about you try doing this?" then whipped his a** in playing real guitar

Re: How do you do it?

It REALLY changes for me based on the game.

A game like Americas Army, I practice every map, and since every map has objectives, my clan and I set up ways to guard the objective, and good tactics for taking it. Since most of us are military vets we all apply real tactics to it (Binding overwatch, formations, sniper/scout teams, etc)

A game like AmrA: Armed Assault, We do a camapign I scripted, and to train for that I made training courses kind of like what the army does (so that way we dont die in the game and have to restart hte mission I put us up against wall targets and empty tanks, I know, i get a little to real and hardcore at times).

But on games like Call of Duty 4 / World at War, I just keep playing. On specific map modes and such I will set up a role. Such like on CTF on WaW I will use the browning M1919 with a bipod and set up a defense position with my sniper (my clan is hardcore competitive on gamebattles). On War mode, I will use an SMG with double grenades. But as for actual training, there is none, I just keep playing, learn the map, learn what works, and apply it come match time.

Re: How do you do it?

I wondered about this too,how do yas get so good where ya can join those tournaments and win big money etc at for example the PGL = Professional Gamers League. ive tried to get good at UT 2004 etc but i can do it only for so long and i get real bored with it.

Also ive heard of people get real addicted to Everquest and Everquest 2 they even call it Evercrack. i like EQ 2 but i cant see where or how they got the term Evercrack makes no sense to me,like i said i like everquest 2 but i wouldnt call it evercrack lol.

Id love to get real good a a game so i could go to a tournament like the PGL and win nice money,im 34 years old,do they even except people that old at those places? i ask cause when i watch stuff like the PGL on G4 all i see is young people like 18 and under no one like 34+.

Ive tried Americas Army its a cool game but i suck at it lol.
