Will my RAM bottleneck my new CPU?

    Hi Everyone,

I have a new quad core build with a DDR3 memory standard mobo. I want to upgrade my processor from a Core2Quad with an FSB of 1333 Mhz to a Core 2 Extreme with an FSB of 1600Mhz. My Ram clocks at 1333Mhz, and I was wondering if this could be a problem with the functionality of my comp.

Stats on the hardware in my comp that this issue concerns are as follows:

    Motherboard: ASUS P5E3 PREMIUM/WIFI-AP @n LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

    Processor (current one): Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80569Q9550 - Retail

    Processor (desired): Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield 3.0GHz LGA 775 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80569QX9650 - Retail

    RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ3RPR13334GK - Retail    (Total of 8 GB)

Please let me know and thanks to whoever can help me out!

    It shouldnt' cause any issues.

BTW, What are you trying to achieve by dumping $1,000 on a new processor? At stock speeds, you'll be just getting a 6% performance boost.

Bottle necking? Not really but tbh putting that much down for a new cpu doesnt seem to worth it. And with Nehalem coming up fast you could wait and get a core i7 for around 400 and a mobo for about the same and have a much faster build. And you should be able to use that memory with an i7 build. But for a real performance boost i7 is the way to go.

    CPU:Q6600|g0@3ghz
    MB:Asus Striker II Formula
    Mem:2x2gb|Corsair DOM 1066 5-5-5-15
    GPU:EVGA 9800gx2(Being RMA'd)
    PSU:Corsair 750tx
    HDD: 1xWD 500gb 1xSeagate 500gb
    Case:TT Armor(with 250mm fan)
    All bought on Newegg.

No I don't think it is a big deal.

    FSB 1600/4=400MHz

     RAM 1333MHz/2=667MHz

it is still faster :-) Wink

Re: Will my RAM bottleneck my new CPU?

Thanks guys! Intel, I heard of that ratio of FSB to the mem clock before, I just didn't know exactly how it was applied, especially in the case of quad core procs. Much appreciated! And Sergei and Knight, I definitely agree with you guys, but in this case, with the i7 Nehalems are coming out next week, and prices for the extremes should be plummitting, plus I have a very generous friend who is willing to buy my 9550 from me. Also I built my computer not too long ago (past 3 months), so I would feel really guilty starting a new build around the new mobo architecture just to throw the i7 into it, though I am tempted lol. Thanks again for your help guys.

Well don't be surprised when you don't notice much improvement after shelling out a grand. Also, for the i7 build, if you decide to do it, you'll have to buy new RAM, since DDR3 for i7 are sold in kits of 3, and are 1.65v, anything higher will kill your new system pretty quick.
