It sounds like your heatsink is not attached correctly. Try taking off the heatsink, clean it, clean the fan, apply thermal paste, attach the heatsink and see how it performs.

Also, just FYI, you wont be able to overclock on the Emachines.

ok I will try that, Just a quick question, why wont i be able to (overclock that is~  sorry im fairly new to the "hardware" aspect of computers haha)

also should i apply thermal paste on the heatsink? (i only put it on the processor cuz ir ead somewhere u jsut put on the processor and then put the heat sink on top)

Re: Need help choosing a heat sink.

Well companies like Emachines, Dell, HP, etc. don't want people to fry their processors by doing something dumb trying to overclock. Therefore they have special BIOS which does not allow overclocking. In order to overclock a processor, the system has to be custom built (or purchased from a high end system manufacturer......like the super expensive Alienware).

After you have the old thermal paste removed from the heatsink and the processor, you apply the new thermal paste onto the processor, just don't put too much (pea size drop is enough).

Re: Need help choosing a heat sink.

Unless you flashed to an non-Emachines BIOS, the answer is no.

You can look around the BIOS and see if there are settings for setting the FSB, Vcore, different voltages, etc.

Re: Need help choosing a heat sink.

I flashed to a version off intel website ill have to check out that though i dont think there is any settings though like that hrm..im not rly to worried about o/c though.

anyway i did what you said with the heatsink and it still didnt work :\ fan still goes full blast...its a "cooler master"  heatsink looks preaty crappy it has a plastic "shoot" type thing comming up the top of it...no copper on it whatsoever...im thinking its just a crappy heat sink ..it kept my pentium 4 at about 50c and it wasnt on full blast with that..now with my dual core its full blast, i thought dual cores ran cooler then p4's?

Alright, well just look at LGA775 heatsinks.

Re: Need help choosing a heat sink.

Ive used that hsf before kept my q6600 g0 under 58 oc'd to 3ghz. It works well. As for overclocking even if you don't have FSB or multiplier option in your bios you can use the SetFSB software to oc but I wouldnt expect much oc from it. And from what you have said it sounds like the air flow in your case might need work. What kind of fans do you have and where are they?

    SetFSB:

    MB:Asus Striker II Formula
    Mem:2x2gb|Corsair DOM 1066 5-5-5-15
    GPU:EVGA 9800gx2(Being RMA'd)
    PSU:Corsair 750tx
    HDD: 1xWD 500gb 1xSeagate 500gb
    Case:TT Armor(with 250mm fan)
    All bought on Newegg.
