    Vista Ultimate Networking

I have always had the attitude that I could learn to do anything.  However this one has me stumped.  I've searched for days on other forums but decided to post here because I like the responses from many of you on various topics.

    1.  I built 2 identical machines running Vista Ultimate.  I have a 3rd machine running XP Pro (32 bit).

    2. All 3 machines can access the internet through the network.  The drives of all 3 machines are set up to be shared.  The machines running Vista Ultimate settings are: A. Network Discovery, File Sharing, and Public Folder Sharing ar ON. Password Protected Sharing is OFF.  Permissions are set to EVERYONE and FULL on all shared drives.  All Machines have the same Network Name and Workgroup Name.

    3.  All 3 machines can see the other machines on the network and can open all 3 machines and see the shared drives, the 2 Vista machines can access the shared drives/folders/files of the XP Pro machine.

    4.  THE PROBLEM.  All 3 machines get incorrect permissions error when trying to open the shared drives of the Vista machines.

    5.  Prior to this problem I had 3 XP Pro machines with no network problems.  This tells me it's something with Vista configuration.

What am I missing?  PLEASE HELP!

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Vista Ultimate Networking

I'm not a networking genius but I do have a little experience that might be helpfull -- I run three computers at home one desktop that runs vista ultimate x64; one laptop that runs vista home x32; and another laptop that runs xp pro x32.  All three (provided the laptops are at home) are on my wireless network anchored with WRT54G pretty normal settings nothing too unusuall in the router.  Now I use the desktop as a pseudo storage server for the smaller laptops.  So I have one of the drives on the desktop set to be sharred on the network but permissions are set to my admin user acct.  So when logging onto the drive over the network I have to provide my name and password but theese are just "remembered" by the other two computers so in reality as long as it's me or my wife it just works but anyone else would need the password.  I know media sharring operates seperatly from file sharring in vista but I'm dont by any means know the ins and outs of networking for vista or xp.  However, I do know that this setup has worked very smoothly for me in fact it was easier and more reliable than I expected it to be given the range of operating systems in play.

    1. in my experience vista loves to lock stuff up weather you want it to or not -- have you tried requireing loging for permission it might just work better.

    2. I know stupid question -- do all three computers have the same subnet mask

    Hope this is helpful

keep posting this is the kind of problem this forum eats for breakfast -- you'll get it working

Also I know there are some people here who know a lot more about networking than I do so please correct me if I'm wrong

Drive ?  Ok, what about the "Public" folder ? can they access it OK ?  [and did you set the network type as "Private" I hope ! ]

You have to set Share permissions AND Security access rights (two different tabs,) to secure proper connection.  If you did that, then remember that the Everyone group means "everyone who has a profile name that is on this machine."  One solution is to make user profile names the same name on all PC's, that is not always convienent.  Another is to activate the Guest account and add the "Guests" account to both the -Share- and -Security- tabs.

[edit: Click -Start----Run-----type  “control userpasswords2”   see if your OS is eggxpecting a password along with the username….likely it is. You can remove that by un-checking the  Box “users must enter a user name and password to use this computer” ]

[PS: Droboto.....NETBIOS does not care what the Subnet Mask is ]

    Re: Vista Ultimate Networking

Sorry about the delay in getting back.  To answer the question...yes the NETWORK type is PRIVATE and yes all 3 can access the PUBLIC folders.  I went through the START-RUN- portion and unchecked the boxes and then verified teh PERMISSIONS and SECURITY settings.  After all that....the results were the same.

We have become reselute to the fact of only accessing the PUBLIC folders unless there are other ideas!!!

    Thanks
