Having trouble achieving Stable Q9550 OC to 4.0

    System Specs:
    Intel Q9550 2.8
    EVGA 780i SLI FTW
    Nvidia GTX 280 x2 SLI
    G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 @ 1066
    SILVERSTONE OP1000-E 1000W ATX 12V 2.2 & EPS 12V
    Windows Vista 64 bit

    FSB-1884 mhz
    CPU-8.5x
    Linked and synced RAM
    RAM timings 5-5-5-15 2T

    CPU-1.375V
    FSB-1.4V
    Mem-2.1V
    SPP-1.45V
    MCP-1.55V
    SPP MCP – 1.35V

All spread spectrum's are disabled. Everything in this list is disabled: C1E Speed step Execute disable bit My Q9550 is overclocked at 4.0. I am able to boot into Windows, I go to run some stability tests: I run Prime95 to test it out. My idle CPU temps are 40, during load my temps are no higher than 60 and about 5 minutes into the Prime95 test I get a BSOD. I also BSOD randomly when running 3Dmark benchmarks. What settings to I need to change to get a stable system?

     Thank you for your time

You need to lower your FSB or consider better coooling for your CPU, Northbridge, andd/or southbridge and memory.

You're overclocking too much for an air cooled system.

I didnt think temperature was even an issue, with 40 idle and 60 load thats some what of a surprise to me.

What monitoring program for those temps?  What HS? You may not hit 4ghz stable I know my 9450 will not, 3.8ghz stable is it for me.

Re: Having trouble achieving Stable Q9550 OC to 4.0

If your getting 60C at load (prime)on all cores then your temps are really good. Chip might not have 4ghz in it. I really wanted 4 out of mine but just not  there at any voltage can boot but not stable.. Good Luck!

Re: Having trouble achieving Stable Q9550 OC to 4.0

Its getting 60C at 4.0GHz? I hightly doubt that.

60C is the g=beginning of "possible instability".

And what's your VCore max set to? I bet that's redlined too.

The temperature increases dramatically as you get higher FSB's, and Realtemp is knows to have issues with accuracy under certain situations.

Have you raised the VTT Voltage any? it might help.

Edit ....... the 45NM cores love VTT

Maybe increasing the chipset voltage and ram voltage is what it needs.

Just a thought for the setting

CPU 1.37-1.40V (above the intel's recommendation, do it on your own risk)
    VTT  1.35-1.45V
    NB/SB 1.6V

Don't know how well it works, but give it a try.

Re: Having trouble achieving Stable Q9550 OC to 4.0

Also a few known good settings.

       466.6Mhz        1866QDR        RAM @     933Mhz           =3966Mhz
      475Mhz           1900QDR        RAM @     950Mhz           =4040Mhz

Make sure Speedstep, Thermal, & CE1 disabled.

And if your going over 1.325v on the CPU, watch the temps like a hawk, that thing will get smoking hot at first. After a while of "burning in" (few months) I have been able to lower my CPU Voltage considerably and it is still stabil. very odd, never seen that before.
