VNC - A Remote Login program ..help?

First off, I consider myself technically sound and knowledgeable.. I'm a computer/electronic technician.

    The Situation:

The issue I'm having is with remote logging into a family members computer. I can talk to him via IM and such. But when I ask him to give me his IP it comes off as internal (192.168.0.3, gateway is 192.168.0.1) and I can't ping it. My guess is that this is because he is behind the router. I told him to go to 'what is my ip dot com' and it gave me some jacked up IP that I can't ping. I know the program works because I had him remote login to my computer by simply giving him my IP and the password.

     The Question:

How can I get his real IP so that I can ping him and then remote into his comp?  My guess is something through the host computer but I forget the command that shows all the computers on the network and their real IPS (I wanna say its like network -a) or something. Thanks for the help in advance.

He needs to set up port forewarding on his router. Chances are that the IP he got at whatismyip.com is the correct one. Also, his firewall has to be configured to allow VNC.

His firewall was off (lol) so I knew it wasn't that. And yeah I had him remote into my comp and than I did netstat -n and saw his ip which was the one from whatismyip.com . I'll try port forwarding and see what happens.

It sounds like a hassle to do it that way. There is a free service that does all of the work for you called logmein. It is definitely worth checking out.

BTW: I'm a computer networking and system administration major.
