    Optimizing utorrent

Disclaimer: using a bit-torrent for illegal download is not condoned by either me or anyone on this forum. There are legal torrents out there and you should only use bit-torents for those legal purposes.

I use utorrent for downloading torrent files, usually patches for my games or other large files. The preferences below will optimize utorrent to its fullest potential.

    Connections

      Port used for incoming connections

         63469 - change it to 45682

    Bandwidth

    global upload rate

65 and I alternate to 1000KiBs when not downloading to keep my ratio high.

     number of connections

       850 - change to 1890

    max number of connected peers

       125 - change to 2329

    number of upload slots

        30 - change to 14

    Queueing

    Max # active up & down 60

    Max # active down 63

    Ratio

    150 - change to 100

    Re: Optimizing utorrent

With what kind of bandwidth would it make sense to have 63 concurrent downloads?? Unuts

That doesn't make any sense. Even with superfast bandwidth, your not going to be downloading 63 torrents at their max possible download speed.

That would just make downloading any file completely take forever.

Unless you have some special 200Mbit bandwidth line I would highly recommend against that.

    Some math:

Assuming a 5Mbit download speed, that would give each torrent on average 9.92kb/s of bandwidth...

Assuming a 10Mbit download speed, that would give each torrent on average 19.84kb/s of bandwidth...

Assuming a 20Mbit download speed, that would give each torrent on average 39.68kb/s of bandwidth...

    For example:

Let's say that you have a 10Mbit line (1,250kb/s) and you are downloading files that are seeded enough to send out about 200kb/s. You wouldn't want to have more than 6 downloads occurring at the same time or you are unnecessarily making your downloads take longer (1250 / 6 = 208kb/s).

I'm gonna have to disagree with these recommendations.

    Re: Optimizing utorrent

I guess you are right but it is like my firefox. I have it set to allow up to 10 rows of tabs but I never - ever use that many. So, it is noted by Ironman allowing 63 concurrent download slots isn't needed.

But, if I go to download 30 files - instead of waiting around for a file to complete downloading and then start another it is better to just allow the files to start automatically. If a file is seeded more it will get most of the bandwidth anyway and download first even though the others are still downloading and once the heavily seeded file is done the others will get more prority.

If I were to upload a bunch of files then it will spread out the 1000kB/s to each upload. So, instead of uploading one file to the swarm at 1000kB/s it will upload multiable files at 30kB/s instead.

Actually it wouldn't be better, that's the point I was trying to make. That would make downloading any file take way longer than it's needed. You are much better off reducing that number. Downloads will finish much faster and will automatically move on to the next one as its finished.

But, whatever floats your boat. When I download files I want them to finish as fast as they possibly can. Wink

Other may be satisfied to just wait for all the downloads to finish whenever they do.

    Re: Optimizing utorrent

I don't know Ironman. I just changed my settings on a new computer and doubled my download rate...If I can upload and spread bwidth out for more files when not downloading no big deal. Anyway no one should really be downloading that many files.

    Re: Optimizing utorrent

Thread is a little bit old, but I wanted to know how you came up with those, sepcirfic numbers. What is the logic behind them.

Also, what chnages in speed did you observe and what is your internet speed.

Will these settings work for a 8MBps down cable?

    Thanks!
