Problem with Sony Nec Optiarc AD 7071A

I have this DVD burner for a year or so, and few days ago it started to act up on me.

Some discs i burend at a friends it just wont read. it spins them, then it changes icon in my computer from DVD-RAM Drive to CD-Drive , the icon shows disc with DVD writen on it. And when i try to open it, it is empty.

I had different brand of media, same thing. Me friend burnd 3 dvds on his comp and gave one to me. The one he gave to me turned out empty also but the other 2 driver read normaly.

I have tried almost all discs i could find and every 5th disc does that. Some are tdk some are Verbatim some princo media, it shows no pattern it can be new old, clear, scratched no difference some will read some will show empty.

I have encountered this problem and ppl told me about it some say system reinstall will fix but i doubt.

If you have any solution appart of gettin new drive for $20 i will be gratefull!

    Thx

i am not sure, but in xp, it seems that when you put an empty dvd in to the drive, it will display as "CD" drive and i think if you put the DVD+ OR DVD- format, the windows might not know such medias and it will label them as "cd" drive too. maybe it means that you dvd drive does not support some of the formats. and are you using Nero?

Ye im using nero, i tried to update ASCI and even installed SP3 for winxp. I took out the drive and attached it to another computer i have, it read the disc that he woudlnt read in the first place but after tring to load em the second time it poped explorer error. Other computer has Vista on it. I will eventually get new drive, prolly Pioneer or something else but for now i really  would like to solve this mistery.

To share some luck I had recently that may help, look for a firmware update, I had problems that were like yours recently with a Sony DRU-710 and when I did the most recent formware update for that drive it now sees the 16x disk that are out now that it never did before. I did a quick search with your model and came up with this page

    http://www.sonynec-optiarc.eu/en/support-service/downloads/fw_dvd-writer-ad-series.html

I don't see your model (I woulden't experment) but you get the idea. Hope this helps --- Bill
