    College Cookin

So, does anyone have any good ideas for meals for a college student?

Ramen noodles and mac & cheese only carry one so far.

Dont care if it sounds funny, i've eaten a dorito and hot dog sandwich before.  Lets hear what you have to eat.

    My cookin gear:
    -----------------------------------------------------
    Stove-top (4-burners)
    Oven
    Fridge
    Freezer
    Toaster (2 slice)
    Microwave
pots and frying pan (none crockpot size)
knive set and other misc. utinsles

    sink
    diskwasher

Its really just a regular kitchen pretty much.

    Re: College Cookin

are you capable of cooking for yourself? if so then ill think of some of the stuff i do for myself.

cereal is good anytime of the day Smile

you can make deli sandwiches, cold cuts and cheese from the deli section and whatever bread you like.

    Re: College Cookin

Not really what you're asking for....but whether you live on campus or not, befriend some dorm chicks.  They never use all their food card monies.  You can milk that pretty hard if you do it right.

Hey, it ain't Morton's, but it's free.  And I think most have Gatorade or something like that for later.  I remember hauling cases of Gatorade and Arizona Iced Tea out of there toward the end of semesters when the ladies would realize how much of their card was left (better to give it to me than to the school)

Hot dog and dorito sandwich?  That sounds pretty good actually.  Yes

    Re: College Cooking

Hey Kunzy been there done that dude, get yourself a 4-6 quart Crockpot so that on weekends you can cook up a large pot of stew, chili, roast or soup and then freeze it so you can stick it in the microwave during those school nights you need to study. As for recipes I have so many I could write a book but here are a couple of quickies, buy you some instant mash potatoes and some canned soup heat the soup and pour in the instant mashed potatoes stirring till it gets to the thickness you like then eat up, Home made chili 1lb. hamburger a can of tomatoes a can of mushrooms and spices IE chili powder salt and pepper fry up hamburger with spices added to your taste when cooked add tomatoes and mushrooms bring to a simmer and serve you could add bell-peppers, not peppers and onions if you want to splurge. If you have a floppy drive on your computer I have an old floppy with many recipies on it that can change the # of servings to adjust the recipe PM your address and I'll send you a copy.Yes

    Re: College Cooking

Chillie Dogs, I loved on those things. As well as sandwiches and I always made myself soups in the winter. You can buy soup for so cheap and its easier then ramen noodles. Dont forget grilled cheese either.

For a solid meal at a good price, stock up on all the pasta roni, rice a roni and humburder helper you can. Most times you can get all the pasta roni's on sale for a $1 each. Cant go wrong there and its simple to make.

    Good luck!

    Re: College Cookin

good one SJ, I forgot about the essential meet ones. But yeah, Hamburger Helper is awsome, pastaronis are good but only as a side so make something with them, they tend to be small servers. Or they get old fast when your eating them. They are good but pasta is only good for so long before you need to combine food with it.

    Re: College Cookin

aahh college days i remember those days i used to get roman noddles a couple slices of cheese and a can of mixed vegetables and mix it all together came out pretty good. Hamburger helper all ways hit the spot too. Hot pockets worked too. Make friends with some one that works at a fast food restaurant a good friend of mine used to be the manager at a taco bell he would give me and my roommate the hook up all the time it  was great or some times we would go to a pizza place across the street and give them a bunch of tacos for like 3 large pizzas. I used to eat tuna fish and mac and cheese not a bad combination really lol. If your school as a culinary program hit some poeple up from there i know the on in my school every wensday for 5 bucks they would serve a 3 course meal most of the time it was hella good some times it was like whoa u need some pratice lol. Hey try appling for food stamps my roommate got some for like 3 or 4 semesters he bought all the food and i bought what wasnt coverd by the food stamps that was great while it lasted lol

hmm, that one from hog sounds pretty good.  May need to try that one sometime this week.

I like chili dogs, but am afraid of the consequences

@SJ: Never thought of that.  there is a walmart here, i could get some cheap stuff from there.

@dragon:  hmm, never mixed ramen with anything before, maybe i'll toy with that idea.

    Re: College Cookin

I had so many 99cent turkey dog packs and ramen noodles in college I have never eaten either one since.  It was the best when I had 2 roommates that worked at McDonalds and they both were on the closing shift so I had many a day old eats from there as well.

Besides most of your food money should be going towards really cheap beer, don't let the 21 age thing get in the way either, find someone of age who will buy or find the liquor store(s) that doesn't card.  I recommend:  Busch Light, Old Milwaukee, Hamms, PBR, Milwaukee's Best, there are a few more but these were the cheapest (actually Hamm's was the lowest price as we would go over to Superior and buy 30 packs for $6).

    Re: College Cookin

    ^ Totally.

Don't waste your time and money cooking food.  There's a pork chop at the bottom of every beer (that's what I always heard) and you should spend your time perfecting your Jungle Juice recipe....

I always believe what Chef on South Park said: "There's a time and place to experiment, and it's called college."

Now, I only applied this to alcohol, because drugs are way illegal.

Oh, and by the way, it's your choice to drink, don't let anyone ever tell you differently.

    Re: College Cookin

heading down to the store here in a bit.

    EDIT:

Man, that hit the spot.  Cost me about $8.50 and made enough for 2.

Need to do something with the mushrooms though.  Let them simmer for an hour but they still were pretty firm and didnt absorb any chilli flavor.

With winter coming, i may make this 2-3 times a month till i can perfect it.  Nothing like chilli in the winter
