hope no one minds me replying to an old thread but i couldn't resist.
I would say it's not weird not to know basic html - i would say most people who use the web don't know basic html - most of them probably dont even know what html is. Now if you want to create web pages - then yes it would be a very good idea to know the basics. However, if you don't need to create any web pages, then there's no need to know it and it probably wont be of any use to you. It's not like if you know some html the web is going to work better for you.
html is pretty basic and to learn the basics would probably take you a day at the most. So if you are curious, then go for it. but if you aren't and dont use it, i wouldn't worry about it. If you have a modern html editor, i would make a basic page in that and then look at/play with the code it generates. Also, a good intro book wouldn't be bad. I usually like the teach yourself XYZ books in 24 hours so you could try the html one. Or do a search for online html tutorial and i'm sure you'll find tons.
