Just curious but is it weird?  Not to know basic HTML coding?  Of course I did learn all my computer stuff by myself, not actually going to school for it, but still isn't HTML a pretty basic thing?  when it all comes down to it?

I absolutely think so..  Both my friends and I taught ourself HTML in high school. One of them went on to major in politics and the other went to join the army. They certainly weren't the Computer Science major that I was.   When I got to college, I did take a formal class in XHTML/CSS, simply because CSS was fairly new at the time and I never really had the time to get into it. Also, I needed easy credits because Calc was takiing all my study time.

I really think basic HTML should be taught to those who don't already know it before 10th grade.

If you use the internet at all, you will find a use for it from time to time.  Sure, there's webpage editors that do all the work for you but they throw in so much junk code that it's not funny.  Also, pre-generated pages will never be beaten by hand coded.  Furthermore, I managed to learn HTML in a weekend.  I actually learned how to code HTML before I really understood how to use a web browser.  At the time, I only used the internet for games and ICQ(back when ICQ was still owned by Miriabilis and not the bloatware AOL turned it into).  I didn't bother with e-mail and I didn't surf webpages unless I -absolutely- had to.  Of course, the fact I was on 33.6 dialup modem and that webpages were super slow at the time and mostly text with maybe a handful of images didn't help.  You certainly didn't have any of the flashy looking, fast loading sites that exist now.  In any event, there's really no excuse for not learning it.  Even elementary kids have the skill it takes to learn HTML.

Asking if not knowing basic HTML is weird on a forum is like asking if not knowing basic math is weird at an accounting firm.
 

I have a basic handle on HTML, and I love it.  I've put together a couple of little sites, and it's turned out to be pretty cool.

A good book is SAMS Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 hours.

I got that book off of eBay for like $2  (not including shipping)... But it has been well worth it.

It’s quite necessary. Nowadays, plenty of information is assembled on internet. Favorable

html knowledge can help you a lot in editing documents which are based on webpage

forms. You can edit the documents to the structures you want without buying any editing

tools. Moreover, html is available to all the browsers instead of depending on a specific

format of certain editing software like ms office, openoffice…. Therefore, it will be quite

useful to learn html.

Again..  everything (mostly) from web pages comes out as HTML. It is the backbone structure of a web page. Again we have modifiers like CSS which takes the logical structure (hierarchy) and you can attach now design elements and media types to change how it is displayed. As things changed to XHTML/XML... no longer is a "web browser" the only form of way to show a web page. XML has become the standard to display content and the structure behind it..  now in software applications, file formats like MS Office 2007 files (end in .___x ), and even the basic of web pages with XHTML. That 'X' just tells us now "we" are trying to use strict coding practices..  and the HTML.. now has the same rules as XML..   We close our tags, put quotes around attribute values. Again, web pages are not that strict and allow it to be sloppy code and still show up on the site. However, getting into XML, you are more restricted.

It is a good idea for those to have a basic understanding of HTML and maybe some CSS so they can put both structure and design together.

I would say it's not weird not to know basic html - i would say most people who use the web don't know basic html - most of them probably dont even know what html is. Now if you want to create web pages - then yes it would be a very good idea to know the basics. However, if you don't need to create any web pages, then there's no need to know it and it probably wont be of any use to you. It's not like if you know some html the web is going to work better for you.

html is pretty basic and to learn the basics would probably take you a day at the most. So if you are curious, then go for it. but if you aren't and dont use it, i wouldn't worry about it. If you have a modern html editor, i would make a basic page in that and then look at/play with the code it generates. Also, a good intro book wouldn't be bad. I usually like the teach yourself XYZ books in 24 hours so you could try the html one. Or do a search for online html tutorial and i'm sure you'll find tons.

and most people will not get that joke - just like most people dont get the joke on my tshirt 'there are 10 types of people in the word, those that know binary and those that dont' :) Then again most of the people who wouldn't get either of those jokes probably wont be reading this anyhow.
