I posted this a few other forums and already cut out some bulk

    -$50 for 3rd party HSF

    -$60 mobo from P45 to P35

-$50 went from diamond brand 4870 to HIS brand

-$20 front panel audio + usb + firewire

    -$10 dual case light kit

    -$10 converter 5.3 to 3.5 bay

so anywhere else I can shave off some $ ?

dont try to convince me on a different case, thats deadset or gfx card (no nivida zealots plz) too, cpu is as low as the new wolfdale cores are (planning to mega OC to get money's worth ^_^ )

also the PSU seems the best for the money, I know people are gonna come in and post $100+ PSU's, im trying to save money here though not add it on else where, that one should work fine

also I know floppy's are no longer used, pls dont not post this, I know, I still however have them lying around, and always nice to have to get into DOS or flash bios with...

in addition to those componets I also have 2 IDE hard drives and 2 DVD-ROM + DVD-RW drives right now, so I do need that rosewill IDE+ sata controller card also I need it for the 360...

now that it out of the way~ begin thread

mega oc without aftermarket cooling? am i the only one that sees something wrong with that statement?

and why spend $170 on an outdated p35 mobo when you can get a p5q pro with the p45 chipeset for around $100 after $15 mir

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299

and a wireless pci card for around 20 bills...maybe less http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839121008

good thing about that board to is you'll have the option to xfire down the road if ya feel the need for another 4870...just my .02 happy building

oh yah before i forget you'll prolly have to have a older tech cpu to update your bios on the p35 to accept the wolfdale but i'm not 100% possitive

Re: new rig, looking to save $

I'm not sure I would claim that the PSU is the best for the money without at least some sort of evidence such as a review or something.  Personally, I haven't seen a review of it myself, but just from the fact that I've never heard of it, it isn't even 80% efficient, and is more than half as cheap as any other respectable 500w-600w unit is normally a good indicator that you're going to get what you pay for.  Personally, I wouldn't risk purchasing a product that is the life line of my computer without doing a fair amount of research.

The case might be a bit of a tight fit with that video card, I didn't think the case was very good build quality at all when I used it for a build for my roommate.  My Coolermaster Centurion 5 which I payed $20 less for seemed a bit more roomy and was noticeably superior in quality.  Deciding on a case because of looks is always a personal thing though, so the only thing we can say about that are our own experiences and you can take what you like from it.

I agree, you saying you plan on overclocking the nuts off that processor yet not having an HSF in your cart is rather odd.  The HSF that CPU would come with is a half height one compared to any quad core or 65nm Core 2 Duos.

For the motherboard, I would recommend going with the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R or UD3P as they are quite superior to the board you have listed, and cheaper.

would I lose any other features (besides wifi) if I went with the P5Q Pro ?

I dont think I will add another gfx card for xfire down the road, it will almsto likely be single card setup then I will replace it and sell the card or give it someone else, and the psu will have enough to just run a 4870, going from 9250 PCI to a 4870

think I will just skip the wifi then, I also forgot about the last part about needed an older CPU to update bios, you are probably right

also I probably used the word "mega" loosely, I read a few reviews that got it to 3.3ghz on stock HSF, thats find for me, 3ghz would be fine too, im going from a P4 @ 2.4ghz should so I be happy with it :)

well I think the user reviews on newegg are the best reviews, even got a few people who have been using it over a year now with SLI and still going strong, best bang for buck imo.

for the case, I know it isnt exactly "ultra sturdy", but its going to be sitting on a desk, not being caried around and such, I think the 4870 is about 10" long, from reviews ive read it should fit in with a bit room to spare, but also come on tell me that case doesnt look amazing? I just love the overall design of the case, from the clear front door, temp meter, lights on the front, manual drive instal (most cases are tooless, not a fan of them...), im will to sacrifice for the looks of the case

see the above quote for answer for HSF, I shouldnt have used that word, mid OC might have been a better word

thanx for the suggestions, keep em coming :)

User reviews are nice but I hardly recommend purchasing something just based on them.  A review from a reputable hardware site is what I was referring to, but if you are satisfied with that and can settle for an outdated design, you are then one who will be buying it in the end and I've pointed out what needs to be pointed out.

The case, I really don't think I could have that sitting next to me personally.  I prefer a less flashy, more classy case.  It may have a lot of features on the front of it, but they are very cheap, lots of plastic and thin metal.

The card will definitely fit, I was just alluding to how close to the hard drive cages it would get and how cable management might be a tad more difficult.

Re: new rig, looking to save $

ah ok, the case is fine by me, different people just prefer different things

there will be 3 hard drives in there, 1 SATA and 2 IDE

the psu I know isnt that greatest but will do the job in this rig without too much $, it fits all the power requirments as well as has all the necessary power connectors I need

the mobo is the only thing now,  the ram too, I think you can get 4GB of ram for that price

between the ASUS P5Q Pro and Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P is what ive rounded down, the question is now which one...

    also is this good ram?

Yup, cases are definitely a personal preference type of issue, so thats cool.

I think you'll be able to work around the video card with that many hard drives, but just make sure to keep the video card in mind when installing the hard drives.

I really like the Gigabyte more, their new UD3 (Ultra Durable 3) products are really quite amazing quality so far and have been extremely competitive with their pricing.  Here is one review of many out there, just takes a bit of googling.

that gigabyte board is very tempting right now

the bios OC menu vs. ASUS bios oc, how are they?

other then that, everything else seems good, just one less internel USB connector but a bunch more rear i/o ports

ASUS needs to make more good board like the P5W DH-Deluxe... Ive been noticing as decline in the quality of their boards over the past few years

ive also noticed the P5Q-E for $10 more then the gigabyte, how is it in comparison, p5q-e looks just like the p5q deluxe

and any commecnts on the ram I posted?

looks decent to me man but i still can't let it go without suggesting some aftermarket cooling....and with the money you've saved on the mobo and ram you could pick up this xiggy and bracket and be a lot safer in terms of overclocking that wolfdale

I know, but im lucky if I can even get this stuff, I might not even OC (a few posts up I said I had a P4 @ 2.4ghz) so I should be very happy with this upgrade for that CPU, vid card too

I will consider it in the future since I just have to snap that one in without removing everything (original HSF pick was the ASUS silent square to go with the P5K D)

will bookmark that HSF, thanks for the suggestion :)

also no one answered my question from a few posts above

"ive also noticed the P5Q-E for $10 more then the gigabyte, how is it in comparison?, p5q-e looks just like the p5q deluxe"

man...so far great build...mite take a few items off of there for myself however ;)

no expert but here are my thoughts:

what OS are you using? i skimmed through most of the above post but didnt remember seeing an OS selected..

and well here is a cheaper HSF that will get the job done...for MID-OC..cheaper than the xiggy

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134

personally do you really need the 4870? that is an AMAZING card...but if you can get by with a 4850...then you would save major money...

on the mobo..well i have always used asus mobo's and i have never had a problem with them...no experience with the P5Q-E however but my bet is that either way...you would be getting a great board

and my 2cents....im not an intel man...so u could prolly save money with an amd...but intel is a great choice...but if you really wanted to save some money

have fun and great build so far man.

I wanna get a card and not upgrade for a long time(yes I could go 4870X2 but it wouldnt fit and I dont think
