    What do I do?

Alright so I just purchased COD:WAW..mainly to play online....Well I was rather disappointed to find that I had a ping of 263 and the game was extremely laggy.....so I went to speedtest.net and tested my download and upload rates and much to my dismay (i almost cried) my download rate was a whopping 353 kb/s and my upload rate was 155 kb/s.  I am in college and live off campus (on campus internet was awesome....especially for COD4)  I have a comcast cable TV and cable internet bundle.  I am using a Linksys WRT54GS router, I have 2 desktop computers hardwired through the router and 2 laptops connected wirelessly....so I guess my question is: Is my problem my internet service, my router, or a combination of both?  I am willing to upgrade both my internet service and my router if I need to.

Other details you may want to know:  My brother and I both want to play COD:WAW online at the same time(we live together so we are both wired through the same router), My spending limit for a router is $150,I am pretty computer savvy but know nothing about networking, my limit is Port Forwarding

    SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Re: What do I do?

    OK

    1. did you power cycle the router and the cable modem at all?

    2. no one else is using the your router but you and your brother right?

    3. You know that the Linksys WRT54GS router is wireless so if you did not turn that off some one can leach off you and that can cause a slow connection speed as well.

    4. Call the ISP and have them run a static test on the line.

    Re: What do I do?

    1. I don't know what power cycle is

    2. me and my brother both have desktops that are hardwired through the router, my other roommate is using the router wirelessly from a laptop, I also use the router wirelessly throught my laptop

    3. I have the router password locked...is "WPA Personal" the encryption type? and should I change this to like WPA2 Personal or something similar?

    4. And I'll try that

    Re: What do I do?

    1. power cycle means reboot the router and modem.

    2. Make sure your room mate is not doing anything when you get on line.

    3. YES YES YES YES

    Re: What do I do?

Make sure your roomies/brother don't have gobs of torrents open when you're trying to CoD.

Consider upgrading to a faster internet service.

    Re: What do I do?

    Alright....

Yea, I have power cycled the router and the modem....Nobody downloads torrents except me, and I don't have any open.....And I'll change to WPA2 Personal...I am also going to upgrade my internet service.....so no need to buy a new router????

    Re: What do I do?

Good that you power cycled the router and the modem. WPA2 personal will help allot. Before you upgrade the service I would call them and see if there is any static in the line first. No you do not need a new router.

not stellar no.  If you have the 'basic' package though, it's not that far off...   I for instance, have 768kbs down and 128kbs up.  Its been a while since I've seen a service offered lower than that.  If you're paying lesst than $17 for your service, you might have such a service. (perhaps some 'student' rate/service level)  Point is, find out what you SHOULD be getting [are paying for,] and if it's not within 10-15% of that complain, complain, complain.  If lots of people jump-on when you are..... Crying   [but that wouldn't happen near a college...would it ?  DSL's looking better Wink ]

    Re: What do I do?

Well I went ahead and upgraded the service and bought a new router (haha) and guess what??? It didn't fix my problem....sooo I contacted my ISP and there was in fact a problem with my modem transmitting power, so a tech is coming out on Sunday to see whats going on!  I only bought the new router because I wanted it! (I knew that it wouldn't fix my problem) I upgraded the service and it is only going to run me an extra $20 a month...divide that by 3 roomies and thats nothing, so I'm keeping the service and the router. And just for a side note I ran a bandwith test and found out that my internet is only running at 5.68% of the average for my ISP (comcast.net)  But thanks so much for your help Tracer76, I wouldn't have known to contact my ISP without you telling me...soooo my problem definitely would have never been fixed!  So I'm really hoping that the tech can fix my problem!

    Re: What do I do?

Well like I said I could easily downgrade my internet and return the router if I wanted to...but I don't want to.  My router was old and the signal was spotty in places, the new router fixed those problems....and you can never go wrong with faster internet..I'm just happy that my internet may be fixed!  Once again thanks for the help!

    Re: What do I do?

Try connecting the computer to the modem directly bypassing the router and see how your speed tests.

If you have to, switch providers, most people are not fans of comcast.

Your old router must have been dieing ouch. Well at least that did fix the issue some for now. Let us know when the ISP tech gets out there and fixes it and run a speed test to make sure you are stratified be for he/she leaves.

    Re: What do I do?

Technician came out this morning and basically told me that there was nothing he could do....apparently they have nodes scattered through the area and each node has the ability to handle up to 250 modems sufficiently, well he informed me that the node my modem was connected to had about 1000 other modems connected to it and if every modem had a router hooked up to it then that means there is a possibility of 4000 people being on the internet at one time, hence my extremely slow internet speed.  I did some research today and have yet to find another ISP that offers high speed internet in the particular part of town I live in.  So basically I am getting screwed and the sad part is that I HAVE to have internet to do school work, etc....so I have no choice but to keep paying for 6 Mbps internet yet receive 200 Kbps internet.  I am going to contact Comcast's head office in hopes of getting some sort of credit on my account.

    Re: What do I do?

I agree with Tallon they did breach the contract. You have the right to cancel your service at any time. We have 7 Nodes for our neighborhood here.

This is not the best but its not bad either.
