    Wife of a Gamer...need advice!

    Hi Everyone,

I just need a little help finding a Christmas gift for my husband.  He's a big CS player and spends hours and hours at his computer.  I recently bought him an Icemat 2nd Edition but I also wanted to buy him a new mouse.  He's never had a high end mouse before and I'm not sure what he would like.  He currently uses a Microsoft Comfort Optical 3000.  He says he likes the Razor mice though.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to which mice and/or model would work best?  I was reading some reviews and some people where complaining that some mice don't work properly on an icemat, so I'm at a loss as to which sort of mouse I should buy.  I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to all of these computer terms as well.  DPI for example, I'm assuming the higher the number the better; but that's based on the fact that the higher the DPI is the higher the price gets (not a very knowledgable conclusion I must say).  If anyone could lend me a few suggestions or even just explain some of the important features I should look for in a mouse that would be great.  Thanks so much!!

Re: Wife of a Gamer...need advice!

Here are hands down the best gaming mice you can buy:

Logitech MX518 (great optical gaming mouse) $40 shipped

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104178&Tpk=logitech%20mx518

Logitech G5 (laser instead of optical for better prevision and can work on more surfaces than optical mice) $46 shipped

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104076

Logitech G7 (Wireless version of the G5, better battery life than optical wireless mice) $72

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104203

Logitech G9 (Expensive, but also awesome) $90 shipped

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104079&Tpk=logitech%20g9

I've used both the G5 and the G7, and I can say they're absolutely awesome for gaming. My roommate had the MX518, but I didn't like it as it didn't work as well on some slightly glossy surfaces, while the G5 worked great. Some people will recommend the Razer Diamondback or Razer Copperhead mice, but for the same specs, they're more expensive by about 10%, and I personally can't stand them as its not anywhere near as comfortable, and its much too easy to accidentally push the side mouse buttons.

    Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.44GHz w/ Silverstone Nitrogon NT06 (both lapped)

I love my Logitech mouse. I've owned an MX500 (precursor to the 518), LX1000, G7, and G5. My favorite was the G5. Don't have to deal with batteries, has both the forward and back buttons on the side, laser precision, great feel to it. I just couldn't get used to the Razer ones.

I personally have the G5, and it is nothing short of pure awesome. Also, if your husband is really hardcore he is gunna want a wired mouse :)

I also use a G5 rat and it works great.  Friends, family, and co-workers all use the G5 to.  The only problem I have with the G5 is that stupid "non-tangle" cord.  It's so stiff that it dosnt work well when you try to feed it through desk trays or wire holders, they just get caught on every little corner of the desk. :/  Other than that, no major problems.  Had the mouse for years and it's still working. :)

I know I may get slapped around for this one but I still use my logitec trackball for some gaming lol...

Re: Wife of a Gamer...need advice!

I've owned a razer diamondback and a G5. The diamondback before the G5 though. The diamondback's scroll feels really weird compared to that of your standard mouse. It just doesn't feel like it responds in your hand. I also would second that of the side button's being to easily clickable. Not to mention the G5 also came with weights so you can adjust it to your liking.

Ohh to add to all that. I am also a counterstrike player myself. CS: source to be exact. I couldn't like the G5 any more than im liking it now.

Doesn't it feel exactly the same as the G5 and G7? lol.

Yes it's essentially the same design, maybe slightly modified since then. But it's a design that's worked great for the past few years. The G7 only has one side button, it's the Back button by default; there's no Forward button. Had to reconfigure a few things in games to account for that when I got the G7. The G5 has both side buttons.

IMO, the only difference between the MX518 and the G5 is optical vs. laser, and higher sensitivity potential in the G5.

Isn't the G5 a bit lighter with the weight cartridge out? I know for a fact I like my mice to be as light as possible.

Also, the early G5's also had only one back button. I bought one like that, and realized it kinda sucked.  I then took it apart and started cutting up plastic to further reduce the weight, and accidentally cut off the side thumb button. oops...

Shortly afterward, I replaced it with my MX1000, which is heavier, but wireless and not 2.4GHz so it doesn't spaz out since its right next to the wireless router.

I still use my MX500 at work, which my sister bought for me for Christmas back in 2002. Damn good mouse.

Re: Wife of a Gamer...need advice!

From what I was able to tell, the G5 weighs as much as the G7 when you put every weight into the G5. So yes, without weights, the G5 is noticably lighter.

My MX500 started dying out from heavy use after about 2 years. But then again, I was gaming heavily at the time and easily put a few thousand hours on the mouse in 2 years, from gaming and regular use.

I said I owned an LX1000, which I don't think actually exists lol. It was probably the MX1000. Yeah, I couldn't get used to that one. I felt like it had minor lag from when you set the mouse on a surface and when the mouse started picking up movement. So sometimes I'd lift it off the mousepad for a second to move it, and when I set it down, it wouldn't register properly. It was less than a second of lag, but I noticed it and didn't like it. Plus it was a behemoth.

The G9 looks like it could be good, but it was expensive all the time, and I really liked my G7 at the time and got my G5 for a good price.

Find out the size of the mouse he uses and go from there. Logitech make great mice, I have a G9 and it's perfect for my medium sized hand.
