    Intel Pricing Forecasts

With Newegg (finally) releasing the Core i7 processors and mobos, what does the community think of future price cuts for enthusiast CPUs?  with the base X58 MSI mobo at $221 here, and the 920 at $320, it would seem that most enthusaists will gravitate towards one of these combos (I know I will be watching the 1366 platform for my next builds...).  And OC'ing info is already widely available online - doesn't look terribly difficult.  Any thoughts?

Honestly, it will be worth waiting until Intel releases the next batch of them.  All of the new i7 processors, save the Extreme Edition one, will be completely locked down in terms of multiplier and FSB. That means NO overclocking.

Better off waiting for the next release.

     Ummmm......No?

You can overclock with all of them, and the overclocking looks pretty good. I just read where some guy got 4.8GHz with the i7 920. It's gonna be good.

    Re: Intel Pricing Forecasts

Overclocking is possible - it is more like overclocking AMD chips than the pre-existing Intel chips we are used to.  Here is one of many links - these guys got to 4.0 fairly easily, on mobos sold right here:

    Re: Intel Pricing Forecasts

I'm just very curious to see Intel's next Enthusiast "P" series chipset.  I hope its not too far behind.  My first Intel chip was a fresh and new Conroe, but after watching the improvements on the Core 2 series not even a year after release, I think I'm plenty happy waiting until we've got some refreshes and additional products before considering the LGA1366 and LGA11XX? sockets.

...hmm.  I'll have to dig up that article that I read.  Good to hear that I was wrong, though :)

Exactly.  I don't know what Intel is try to do with LGA 1156, but I know it won't be so clearcut as this Core 2 Generation.

    Re: Intel Pricing Forecasts

I think that is a very good point.  An article in Tom's Hardware on the new architecture really stressed the evolution of the design rather than it's revolutionary features as the reason for the i7's incredible performance improvements.  Basically, doing everything more efficiently by reorganizing instruction flows and buffers etc.  The article also stressed the obvious foundations for using the architecture for vastly more efficient servers, as opposed to mainstream machines.  Here's the link:

    Re: Intel Pricing Forecasts

All the overclocking tests have been done with custom cooling solutions that most of the consumer skillset folks on here CANNOT duplicate.

There currently as of this post are NO consumer grade 3rd party air coolers on the market for 1366.

There currently IS NO DATA for overclocking with the 1366 "stock" cooler, but there are lots of anecdotal posts for ppl who have already taken the plunge.

Also, to close, it's been a week, and there have been NO PRICE DROPS in existing LGA 775 parts, and they continue to sell briskly (where's that instant depreciation ppl were talking about?"

It seems as if 1366 just carved out a new high end pricepoint for itself, must like GTX 280 at launch.

Call me impatient, but "meh" on this whole situation.

Yeah, cuz LGA 1156 is supposed to be mainstream. So I guess 775 isn't going to be "replaced" until NEXT YEAR,
