    Phenom 8750 Black OCing

Out of curiosity, does anyone with this chip have Crysis and can attest to any performance differences between stock speed and overclocking it? I'm not doing it now because I'm waiting until the newegg 30-day warranty runs out, but that also gives me time to do research.

InsideHW - AMD Phenom 8750 Black Edition

"Tested sample worked stable and with no problems on 1.325V at 3.2GHz clock. For stabile 3.3GHz it needed 1.395V while for 3.4GHz it’s necessary to include high quality air or water cooling and voltage at reasonably high 1.475V."

Wow, better than I thought, but remember, each CPU is different and has its own ceilings.

If you're looking for increased FPSs though, you may want to consider upgrading the GPU though. There's much eye candy available now for great prices that would do much better. Just got a HD3870 myself for a sell build for $70! Can't beat some of the deals around now.

    Re: Phenom 8750 Black OCing

A GPU upgrade is coming within a few months. Basically I was building the system and ended up nickel-and-diming the cost up. It's one of the very reasons why I went with the 8750. I know about the 8750's overclocking abilities, and that's the temptation.

2 more gigs of RAM? $25 more. DDR2 1066: $50 more. A fancy CPU cooler: $25 more (though when I went to rebuild my old 754 cooler, Radio Shack had a nice one on clearance for $15 and it was much better :p). eSATA port: $10-20 more. It just kept adding up and I basically said: "Whoa there. I could take all of that money and put it towards a video card", which is what I did (Geforce 9800GT and Radeon 4850 is the current target range).

On another note, I just noticed the overclocking section. My mistake, mods.

No problem about the wrong section, us EggXperts aren't that picky.

Agreed, I have heard great things about the 8750's OCing abilities. I'm thinking about snagging one after AMD's new stuff releases and prices drop. A 3Ghz+ overclock is not all that uncommon with the 8750, so good luck!

    Re: Phenom 8750 Black OCing

I'd be worried about memory and GPU more than CPU problems for running Crysis. My rig has an athlon 6000+ but since i have 4gigs of DDR2 1066mhz ram and a 4870x2 I can run crysis near max settings with no lag. Running 8750 with that out of date graphics card, Crysis will just laugh at your GPU on low settings.

    Re: Phenom 8750 Black OCing

Actually, I'm playing Crysis, medium, at 25-30 fps. Like I said: I'm saving up for a card like the 9800GT, 4830, or 4850; so, after that card, what then?

I'd say your PSU for sure, time to update that thing to something more powerful and efficient!  Dare I say it'd even be a good idea to do that before the video card?

    Re: Phenom 8750 Black OCing

An OC will help yes. really will, allot.   But with a video card update, and running the new PhysX drivers, the OC won't matter in crysis, the new drivers render it all on the video card. Big Smile

    Re: Phenom 8750 Black OCing

You may need a BIOS update to run a Phenom on that board. Looks like a number of people had probs out of the box until updating to at least bios v, 504. Also, I haven't had much luck Ocing the 780G, except, of all makers, the ECS Black Series 780G, but that's not to sya the ASUS board won't, haven't had the pleasure.

    Re: Phenom 8750 Black OCing

The BIOS thing might be right because I had some problems with Windows stuttering when I held down a key on the keyboard. After the usual routine of updating drivers, I thought it couldn't hurt to update the BIOS. The ASUS BIOS update utility was nice since I could do it within Windows.
