    rockbox is overrated

Even if I stated it was compatible with my MP3 player doesn't mean I do use it Wink I still use the stock firmware.

    Rockbox

Does anyone know if Rockbox voids the standard warranty on newegg? I just recently bought a sansa e250 and I bought it from here primarily for the one year warranty because sansa's are known for their problems. I want to put Rockbox on it but I don't want to void the warranty if that does void the warranty (Rockbox is just a different firmware that you can put on mp3 players.)

    Re: Rockbox

Hi, yes Rockbox will void your warranty.

    From the Rockbox website :

Does it void my warranty if I use Rockbox?

    Yes.

However, most large companies tend to be lenient with warranty claims. So even if using Rockbox will technically void your warranty, quite probably the aftersale service won't cause any trouble. Of course, they can, but it is not really in their "commercial interest" to do so, and there is plenty of testimony from users who got their device replaced even if the issue was caused by misuse (example: hard drive dead due to a fall, or even LCD screen broken).

Iriver now have the following statement in their online warranty terms, specifically naming Rockbox as voiding the warranty: "This warranty is void if [...] the player is opened, repaired, modified or altered by third parties e.g. Rockbox, unless such repair, modification or alteration is expressly authorized in writing by iriver". Archos has also been known to refuse warranty repairs for people that have returned their units with Rockbox flashed.

    On the Sandisk Forums :

Rockbox is neither created nor endorsed by SanDisk. Any "bricking" or malfunctioning of the device (while trying to install Rockbox) can be deemed irreplaceable. We are aware that users like to have options, and as this seems to be a popular alternative. So as a courtesy to our community members this has been stickied

I tried it and it's not really hard to install or anything, and can also be uninstalled easily. But in the end, I prefer using the original Sansa Firmware.

Also, note that Sandisk gave informations to Rockbox devs about how the player works... so, if you install it, and get a problem with something else, they might still replace it under warranty.

    Re: Rockbox

I'm getting really fed up with my Zune recently. It keeps randomly shutting off right in the middle of playing songs. Sometimes it's on for 15 minutes, other times 3 minutes, but it just stops, no warning whatsoever. The battery is fully charged. It's updated to Zune 3.0. I have plenty of free space left. Using it under normal conditions, nothing should be interfering with it or causing it to shut down like this.

One problem after another, it's so frustrating.

Screw it, I'm getting a Sansa E280 and a 8GB microSD card. I'm sick of dealing with this piece of junk.

    Re: Rockbox

About Sansa e200 series and microsd cards :

Look under Settings/Info at your Firmware. If it begins with 1.x then you have a v1 unit and the maximum is 2GB MicroSD unless you install a different firmware called Rockbox. Then you can load the MicroSDHC cards in your computer and play them in the Sansa.

If it begins with 3.x then you have a v2 and it can handle MicroSDHC cards.

    Re: Rockbox

I love my 120GB custom etched Zune, my g/f has one also.I don't know about the random shut downs, its probably just a faulty one.

With a FREE built in radio, wireless syncing. I think its a better value than any Ipod. plus I watch loads of movies on it while at work or on lunch, so its nice having that large screen.

    Re: Rockbox

I love the iPods.  My cousin bought a Zune and I honestly like it pretty damn much.  I don't know.  That's a tough one!
