They managed to bs every answer.  Need to ask why they can manage to make great processors but can't manage to make a decent driver set for their video cards.  I just remember the horror i went through trying to get drivers for the 9550, last and only ati card i ever bought.  What's the sense in supporting dx10.1 when programmers haven't even adopted dx10 fully.

They can't even answer the questions presented, at least not to my satisfaction.  they didn't even answer the last question, just dodged it completely.  who cares about elegance, we want good performance without having to worry about the horrors of installing drivers.

I like amd's processors, but it'll be a long time til i buy another ati card.

and you might try vantage instead of the older 3dmark06, it supports the new hardware.

Before amd merged or bought out ati, ati had a video card that was a 9550.

The 3870x2 is an excellent card actually. The drivers are much better from the old days. I moved from an 8800 ULTRA and glad I did because of the 30% average performance increase I'm enjoying.

People who are still complaining about poor drivers have not used the more recent CCC/drivers. They've improved greatly and work well.

I've tried one of those 3870's at work, and after 6 hours of downloading and installing various drivers for it, i gave up, took the pos back and got a 9600GT, no installation problems at all.  Yeah, the cards are great if you're using them for stylish coasters, but until they fix the driver installation problems, i won't buy one.  That makes two cards i've have problems with.  i've never had any problems with nvidia, maybe atil should steal their software engineers.

Re: AMD answers your questions Pt.1!

LOL, im sure amd is formulating a plan as we speak! But the latest 8.8 or 8.7 catalyst is kinda like dumb down for kids to install it.. So I dont really see how you would have any issues unless you had nvidia drivers installed on the computer before which would explain why you would have issues when you did.

Re: AMD answers your questions Pt.1!

Im smart enough to uninstall the old drivers first.  It just wasn't worth the effort to keep trying to install the drivers for the card.  I don't know if the mother board i have just doesn't like that card or what.  For what i need it for, the 9600 does the job.

Re: AMD answers your questions Pt.1!

Wow...I'm impressed that so many of you sound like stuck up children who are complaining because their favorite toy was broken and they are throwing a fit waiting for mommy or daddy to fix it or buy them a new one! I've worked in customer service before and I know how hard it is to talk to people that have an attitude (that's putting it mildly...back at home, we call this having their heads up their A*****...but that's not professional language). Most of the questions posed to AMD sounded like that. I was thoroughly impressed by how AMDs PR guy handled the situation. He managed to answer the questions politely and succinctly while, at the same time, also managing to politely express his un-appreciation of the tone that all of the questions posed.

Most of the questions were asked with an in-you-face "Why are you so stupid, AMD?" attitude. I actually challenge any one of you to answer those questions as well as AMD did. 9 out of 10 of you couldn't because you wouldn't have the self-control to bite back your tongue (I can already tell, I just read two pages of posts from you :)...). There is nothing wrong with opinions, but, man...some of you really need an attitude check.

As for problems with AMD products, I have had my fair share, but that has not turned me off because I have taken the time to get support if I needed it (assuming I couldn't Google it) and I have received cordial and effective help. And for those of you who claim that AMD is inferior to NVIDIA still, either check your sources (to make sure they are not old an inaccurate) or do some more research. I think you'll find that AMD is still competitive (they were down and out for a while...to be sure...but there is a reason NVIDIA was forced to reduce its pricings a good $200...AMD almost put some NVIDIA partners out of business...that's competition!).

    ramhog:

IMHO, most of the answers seem to come off rather condescending. And other answers seem to be saying, "well, that's just the way it is - deal with it". And somehow it doesn't seem right for him to continually point to reviews as an "answer".

I saw this thread title here -  AMD Answers your Questions! and I thought Alright! Cool! And prepared myself to receive an in depth understanding of where they were headed. But, no, instead it all reads to me like a tired PR man forced to address an annoying group of children, and simply reading from the company's list of standard, all-purpose answers.

In one case he completely avoids commenting on a user's claim of having support questions ignored, by ignoring it himself, and more or less saying, "Well, too bad for you - our stuff works great, just read the reviews."

Really, this has done nothing to increse my interest in AMD any - in fact it's had the opposite effect. I would think they could have had someone with a little more interest in the customers' needs answer these questions - this reads more like an AMD promo blurb, then a Q&A, just that they put it into a Q&A format.

Q: Everyone keeps saying your drivers arent that great. what are you planning on doing about this?
A: Our drivers are excellent.. there are reviews that say so..

Haha, I completely agree with every word that you said, Ram. I originally was planning on getting a 4850 for my new machine, but more and more I'm considering an NVIDIA card/system instead. This interviewee's responses pushed me along a little further toward nvidia.

Re: AMD answers your questions Pt.1!

I am very dissappointed with AMD and ASUS Products, let me start with Asus Motherboard M3A32MVP Deluxe/ WIFI And M3A79-T Deluxe both initially boxed with faulty chipset drivers i find that the bios settings the chipset are very unstable and cause hangup and blue screen of death, the bios update utility fails and there are problems with the Asus probe II utility for monitoring cpu, motherboard  temperature, voltage and fan speed control. Now for AMD CPU AM2/AM2+ Phenom Processors that doesn't support memory running at 1066 when Dimm are occupied on both channel no matter if they are

1GB per module or 2GB per module but yet advertised that it support 1066 memory very deceptive and misleding.i guess in these worst of economic times the investors are forcing the people in the R&D Dept to meet there product deadline no matter what.

Re: AMD answers your questions Pt.1!

My 1.5 cents worth- I've built, for friends and family, a number of desktops over the last 7 years. I can highly recommend an A+ Cert. Guide/ reference book by Michael Meyers and Scott Jernigan as your number one tool. Reading and understanding the basics from this book will put you on a level playing field with some of the more experienced computer enthusiast. Over the years the general consensus

is that ATI Video drivers are problematic and that ATI is slow to fix driver problems. Nvidia has had driver problems as well, but in relation to ATI, they've had less and are generally thought of having fewer driver software problems and thusly are more reliable. I, personally, was quite surprised by AMD's acquisition of ATI. I recently built an animation/video production machine that is all AMD w/ a 9950 quadcore. It has an Nvidia card and performs flawlessly. The machine I'm using right now is a AMD/Via chipset/ATI 1950. (Via chipsets are highly underrated) In my opinion, AMD offers the best bang for the buck compared to Intel. I can't say the same for ATI. All in all , research and buy what you like and try not to get caught up in all the benchmark data graphs.
