    Re: Firefox 3 - Tips / Tricks / Tweaks

If you have upgraded to Firefox 3.0.1 and find you cannot open any internet locations with the error that it cannot dl your request because of your security settings, Try going to Internet Explorer, Yes Internet Explorer, Open IE Security Tab, Internet Zone. Click Custom Level. Find "Lauching Applications and Unsafe Files" tab and set it to Prompt if it has been set to Disable. You can also just change the IE Security settings to a lower setting, like Med. High.

I was having this problem and this corrected it for for. I only used Internet Explorer when I had to and I had the security settings for the Internet Zone set to High.

Firefox is now using Security settings that Internet Explorer uses...I for one did not like having to reset Internet Explorer to a less secure setting than my choice.

Firefox 3 users need this thread. This could be a start of a very needed thread.

Do you have a list of ABOUT:CONFIG modifications for us Firefox 3 users? This would be great to have in one place!

Maybe Hydrogen could change his original post to list all the about:config settings post so far.

I've list two good ones on this thread so far.

Yeah, I've been meaning to put together some sort of compiled, complete default list.  It's a little daunting, and that's why I hadn't promised it yet.  =]

I'll try to get on it.  I was hoping I could find the FF2 thread we had here, it was loaded with some good ones, looked through all of My Discussions.  It would save some time since many are the same...

    IamHydrogen:

    Please add your FF3 whatevers!

    AwesomeBar

By default, FF3 gives you 12 lines of Awesome.  If you'd like to adjust it, type about:config in your address bar.  Insert browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in the search bar.  Double click the entry and change 12 to whatever you like.  (To disable it altogether, use -1, not 0)  Source with pics.

Awesome Bar -> AutoComplete.  (IE and Safari behavior)  Type about:config in your address bar.  Insert browser.urlbar.autoFill in the search bar.  Double click the entry, change the entry to TrueSource

Well, that's all I've found/needed so far.  What else is there?  Help Me

If you are still wanting tips, here is a good site that lists how to use Firefox 3 plus a lot of how-to-do tweaks.

    Re: Firefox 3 - Tips / Tricks / Tweaks

hey hydrogen I wanted to say thanks for the info on the All in One Toolbar. I just love that addon. I don't know if I mentioned it before but the addon "DownloadHelper" is great to for downloading those favorite YouTube videos or other media you come across.

If I didn't mention it before "Download Statusbar" is a great addon.

If anyone has a favorite addon they use...I would like to here about them.

    Re: Firefox 3 - Tips / Tricks / Tweaks

First post edited.  Let me know if I missed anything and I'll continue to add what comes along here.

The about:config list is tough, because some of them need some explanation and one value isn't good for everyone.  Maybe we can just link a bunch....hmmm.

Download Statusbar is a good one.  I used it before my status bar got the axe.  Nice addon.

IamHydrogen, would it be out of line to ask questions, under your post, about the problems we have in Firefox 3? I have a couple that I would like help with.

Ask whatever you like.....you might get more answers in the software area, though.

But heck, no worries either way.  =]

I saw in a previous post McAfee Siteadvisor mention. Is McAfee still updating this program? My Siteadvisor is version 26.6 and always shows "No updates Found" everytime I run the updates. It has been many months since a version change. Maybe the updates are current with no version change?

Another question about Firefox 3.01. Everytime I open the browser, it takes awhile, about 45 seconds or so, before I can use it. The browser is using all of my computer resources during this time. After this gets done, the browser works OK and faster than v2 did.  I thought at first I had a bad extension, but disabling all extension did not help. (I only have 5 extensions, all v3 com.).  Is this normal, or do I have something I need to correct?

Yeesh, not sure, but a few things to check:  Open in (safe mode) from the programs menu.  Any difference?  Check your (options) menu, (advanced), (update) tab.  If FF, Add-ons, and Search Engines are checked, uncheck all and see what that does.  Maybe your AV is scanning FF every time it opens?  Does one of your add-ons update more often than usual?  Gah, those last 2 wouldn't make a big difference between versions...

When all else fails, uninstall, delete your profile and try again.  FFPreloader looks kind of cool.

I use SiteAdvisor and the AVG safe search on top of that. SiteAdvisor is still fairly new and I would expect it to be updated constantly too, but maybe it doesn't need updating. Maybe site advisor gets it update on each site when you visit it or search it. IDK how it works.

    But, it is good!

FF has always taken a long time to first start up for me too. All versions.

be careful Site Adviser like AV will always be playing catch-up with the bad guys.

Yahoo uses it (beta,) and I hit a site yesterday that was a malware pop-up and cleared by SA.

    take care !

normal.  There is a FF pre-loader out there (free 'natch,) which will load part of it on start-up, then if/when you launch it, it will come-up much quicker.

    Tallon41

[Edit: If you have lots of RAM, compressing the FF DLLs will also make it start faster, but if you use the pre-loader this is not necessary.]

    Re: Firefox 3 - Tips / Tricks / Tweaks

Thank you for pointing to my Profile. A light came on and I remembered having this type of problems with Firefox 2.

    Under c:\documents and settings\ME...\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\48cusihx.default...

I found 5 prefs.js files, (prefs-1.js to -4). I deleted these five files knowing that firefox would recreate them again. I also deleted extension.cache, extension.ini and extension.rdf knowing too that firefox would recreate these files.

One or more of these files had to be bad. After a reboot and waiting while firefox recreated these files, It made a big difference in my start up time.

I set firefox to 150meg cache. I have 2.4g ram. Do you think I need a larger cache?

While looking in My Favorites directory where I save my RSS feeds, I noticed that Sage Reader which I have used for a long time was now using Live BookMarks for all the new  RSS feeds I had subscribed too. The Sage Reader version 3 update had changed saving the new feeds from just plain bookmarks to live bookmarks. After deleting all the live bookmarks, I now have a Firefox 3 that I can live with! I now will be looking for a feed reader that does not use live bookmarks it there is one. The live bookmarks were updating everytime I started Firefox.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________

I will try FFPRELOADER. It looks like a neat program. The way I think it works will not save me any total time, except when I open firefox more that one time after each reboot.

Thank ALL of you for the help....It has been great for me!  See, I knew where to ask my questions.

Hey, nice job running with it.  Yes

Have you looked at Sage-Too?  (last screenshot has a checkbox for updating on startup)

Thanks for pointing me to Sage-Too. I installed it and it works with my old Sage Feeds. I just set it to my old Sage Feeds directory.

It has the option to turn off auto updates, which I wanted. It updates when you open the Sage-Too folder....GREAT!

FireFox no longer takes a long time to open. Now about the same time as V2 did.

This is one tip you can add to this Post. This and correcting my profile did the job for me.
