I like the case mod, its got that new technology feel to it, yet not too flashy. Very nice!

We just want to see everyone's boxes dude, and what they use for their daily trip. we certainly understand budgets and neccesity too. You generally won't see too much elitism here, and besides you're still faster than many a builder, so thanks for the picts.

Anyone that tried to knock said rig would be the ones to get killed, believe me. Got a good sense of the bulk of the Eggxperts, and we're all generally civil and mutually respectful. We do have our moments though. Wink

You know it was about a little over a year ago, I was still on a Socket 939. Hanging around here certainly helped me get to my current siggie. So just keep abreast of the hardware and trends, you'll pull the trigger when either you're ready, or your rig tells you it's time.

    Peace, Penewah!

Re: *Sticky* What is in your Rig?

    Rig updated!

It's all in my sig, but the new stuff is a Radeon 4870 512mb and an Asus 22" 2ms monitor.

    Pictures!

Forgot to rotate this one, but this is my desk. Messy in this pic because I was in the middle of upgrading and decided to take some pictures

The 4870. At first I thought it was too long, but after moving cables around I got it to fit. I need to move to all SATA; damn ribbon cables take up too much room. And, I did have good cable management, but when I started adding more things that went out the window.

Case overall. Again, I forgot to rotate it, but the left side is the bottom.

Re: *Sticky* What is in your Rig?

I do graphic and web design.  I built this back in July:

    • Intel Quad-Core Q6600 G0 stepping, 2.4Ghz, 1066 FSB
    • MASSCOOL 8WA741 92mm Ball CPU Cooler
    • Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
    • ASUS P5Q-E LGA 775 Intel P45 Intel Motherboard
    • G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 RAM
    • Two (2) - Foxconn 8600GTS-256N GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 video cards
    • Four (4) - Seagate 320GB hard drives w/16Mb cache.  Drives in RAID 10 for speed & reliability
    • Leadtek WinFast PxPVR2200 PCI Express TV Tuner Card
    • Thermaltake W0106RU 700W power supply (80 PLUS Certified)
    • Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW black/silver aluminum bezel computer case
    • Logisys Computer CLK12BL 12" Blue Cold Cathode kit
    • Rosewill RCR-102 52-in-1 USB 2.0 3.5" internal card reader
    • Windows Vista Home Premium, 64-bit
    • Microsoft Comfort Curve Black USB Wired Ergonomics Keyboard 2000
    • Microsoft IntelliMouse optical USB mouse
    • NEC ND-3550A 16X DVD±R black IDE DVD Burner
    • One (1) - Samsung 2220WM SyncMaster 22" widescreen LCD
    • One (1) - Samsung 225BW SyncMaster 22" widescreen LCD
    • One (1) - Dell 1905FP 19" standard-format LCD
    • One (1) - generic 14.1" widescreen LCD

Yes, you are right, I did use Crossfire-capable motherboard with Nvidia SLI-capable cards.  But I don't use Crossfire or SLI so I really didn't care.  SLI and Crossfire both bond two (or more) video cards to support one monitor and I wanted 4 monitor support...

The P45 Intel board seems like a great chipset (and the P5Q-E has some awesome reviews). Nvidia chipset motherboards were more expensive in comparison to Intel chipsets, it was almost like a "SLI Tax".

    Desktop across three monitors:

I built my desk last fall, by the way...

I will be replacing the two 8600 GTS cards with three HD 4650 cards so I can power up 6 monitors, the three lower ones as shown in the pictures above and three Asus 19" widescreen monitors.

Re: *Sticky* What is in your Rig?

Yeah, with four hard drives and two (soon to be three) video cards, it's a little tight.

In hindsight, a full-size case would've been a better choice (vs. my "mid-tower") but it's really not a big deal, I don't often open my case...

For as much as people rag on Vista, I've had a positive experience with Home Premium 64-bit.  The ability to support over 3.25GB (or so) of RAM, Vista's Windows Media Center and Vista desktop gadgets (and the rock-solid reliability) are great.

Re: *Sticky* What is in your Rig?

Well folks, here I present to you some updated photos of ol’ Penewah’s set-up. If you look in some previous posts, I had the dual 22” on an AMD rig,a nd have since expanded out. I liked the dual set-up, but it had it’s limitations, as wella s its upsides. Work space wise, it was great. Gaming, the reversion to one monitor, I think caused some bugs in the Crossfired 4850s I had going. I say this, because when I took one off, some of those bugs didn’t occur, so I moved in a different direction. Splitting them duals up, I built me an Intel rig. Been wanting to get me hands on an E0 step E8XXX, and lucked out with an E0 E8500.

Here you can see, on this angle, one speaker set woofer is off to the left on the side there (the Lansing set on the AMD box, with Vista 64-bit using a HT Omega Striker – great sound), and the other on the desk (a Logitech X501 on the Intel – still on-board, looking into another card.) Oh and the AMD rig is in the Antec 1200, and the Intel set-up in the Cooler Master HAF. I must admit, I really like the HAF, it’s a great case to build in, and the cooling arrangement is just phenomenal. I’d go so far as to say, a but better than the 1200.

Re: *Sticky* What is in your Rig?

Penewab2007  -- So you have two systems in your office?  I had that setup back then I ran Win98 (back in the day).  One was a stripped out drone, basically a Celeron that could show live web sites while I worked on them on my main computer.

I couldn't imagine going back to that though.  Double the fan noise, double the virus checks, caches to clear, updates to download and install, etc.  It's bad enough having to deal with a tower and a laptop.  Oh, and double the heat, since I was sporting dual 19" CRTs, which made for some sticky Summer days in my home office.

But, hey, more power to ya...

Have you considered a KVM to get you down to one keyboard and mouse?  That's what I used to do, but I never hooked up the monitor connection (because that would've eliminated the dual-screens that I was after in the first place.

Re: *Sticky* What is in your Rig?

I have those speakers, but can't use any of my speakers (have another, bigger set) because of the setup, plus the fact that the basement floods on occasions (but my compy is on a stool)

What's the third mouse for, the Microsoft optical by the speaker? I used to have that mouse, too, but when my last one died and I coudln't find another with which to replace it, I bought my Logitech G5.

At work, I have two comps with a KVM switch like Marcster mentioned. Quite frankly, I hate it, but that's probably because all of my stuff is about 6 years old. The switch sucks, the mouse is one of those ***** Dell commas (I had to tape the bottom on to stop the ball from falling out), one or both computers have 512mb of RAM (one possibly has 256mb, but I don't remember), and they're both P4s. What makes this worse is that I work for an IT company. The other machine, though, belongs to the State Department, which is why it hasn't been updated (long process). My boss was supposed to have gotten me more RAM for one machine, but I think he forgot. I'm just glad they didn't try to put Vista on the systems and that I have XP Pro instead, but that even runs slow.
